This painting took me ages, and was preceded by the WORST possible process.

It was full of mistakes, it was LONG and graceless, it was confused, and it took me a long time to finish exploring the depths of how bad a painter i am till i managed to get my act together and squeeze something halfway decent out of this thing...

eventually, i'm rather pleased with myself and glad that I stuck with it. the challenge here was to create an image that was "finished". this, of course, is not "finished" looking at all, but i don't think i can get anything more out of this. i'll just have to jump on to the next painting and push even farther next time.

critiques are as usual welcome and appreciated.

EDIT: i forgot to add that this was referenced from here [link] (it's a screencap from a russian movie called "1612").

The Terrible progress is here, for the curious: [link]

Perfect! Your portrait has inspired the hero of my next book. Would love to have it as my book cover. Please let me know if it's for sale. Thanks!

i am flattered that my work has inspired you so much, but I'm afraid I have to decline. I'm not currently interested in creating book covers.
i wish you luck with your book and all the best. :)

thanks for taking an interest.

Your colouring is fantastic! Where did you study art? (Or are you self-taught?)

i've learned from a mass of different sources, and i've had a few private art teachers as a child, but i consider myself mostly self-taught because all my technical abilities i acquired and studied myself, mostly from the internet, (conceptart.org forums mostly!) over the past 5 years. i started taking art seriously only at age 20, really. a bit late, but eh. :)

thanks!

I hear that, I took art seriously pretty late myself. However, you're doing great, keep it up ^_^

Such a beautiful piece!
I would have believed it if you said it was hand painted.
Gorgeous.
I like the fading details and the focus on his face.
absolutely stunning :faint:

wow hehe. i really don't see why you have to be so hard on yourself, it came out pretty good and clearly you'd pull the next one off way faster.
the rough monochromic sketchy look works just fine, it's very fun to look at. i was expecting to see these kind of works from you, do some more tryouts, i'm very curious to see of where it leads to. :)
